First
Grade News
A student's
work is never done! Working hard, learning fun, we're
trying our best to get things won! The PHENOMENAL first
graders have been busy trying to improve reading skills, learn
our math facts, explore animals as living things, and understand
how the countries of North America are dependent upon each
other. Some changes have also occurred in
the first grade as Ms. Galloway had to return to Kindergarten
due to a high enrollment of students. However, the transition
for the students as well as the teachers has been very smooth
and successful. We are busy working on our Concept Based
Units (CBU's) and preparing projects that are due October
12th. Parents, please assist your students with
these projects. We thank all parents for their support
and ask that you will continually check your student's backpacks
and assist with homework on a daily basis. Also continue to
read with your students and allow them to read to you as well!
Second
Grade News
The Sensational Second Grade is immersed into
our Interdependence Unit. We have started our journey by traveling
half way across the world to Australia: the country and continent
better known as the Land Down Under, and to the Asian
country of Japan. We have learned not only how these
two countries are alike and different, but are also learning
how the United States of America is
dependent on these two countries everyday. We cannot
wait for you to come visit our hallway this month so we can
show you just how we are interdependent on each
other.
Friendly
reminders:
Parents, please remember that all homework is due on Friday.
We want all 2nd graders to purchase a 2nd grade T-shirt to
wear on our fieldtrips. Please get an order form in
the office. Please reinforce to your 2nd grade student that
hard work = success. So, in order to be successful they
must stay alert, focused, and work hard to keep good grades!!!
Third
Grade News
During
the month of November, third graders will bring our
unit and school-wide learning concept, Interdependence: Georgia's
Native America Meets Colonial America to a close. We
have been studying our state's history; how the cultural and
physical diversity
of Georgia’s people and land affected its change and
growth. We have focused on writing personal narratives,
math journal writing with an emphasis on solving word problems
using regrouping to add, subtract, estimate, and count
money, as well as, writing across the curriculum.
Students are truly enjoying studying Georgia plant life within
their regular classrooms, and especially in our new science
lab led by Mrs. Simmons.
As a culmination
to this unit, we will be taking a field trip to the Chattahochee
Nature Center. Further details about this event will
be sent home soon. We are very excited about our learning
ventures and invite you to join us as we “interdependently”
expand and increase our knowledge!
Fourth
Grade News
October
will be a busy month for the Fabulous
fourth grade. We are continuing our study of Interdependence
with a focus on Native Americans, Ecosystems, and the
Water Cycle. We are surrounding ourselves with the environmental
impact and culture of Native Americans. We welcome you
to come visit our hall and classrooms. Fourth graders
have been enthusiastically engaged in our unit. You
may notice their eagerness to search the Internet, to visit
the Media Center, or Public Library in order to support classroom
research. We ask parents to continue to support our
students and their excitement during this unit.
In mathematics,
students are continuing to work on place value and multiplication
skills. We are also using estimation skills to solve
math problems. Fourth graders are planning our first
field trip to the Atlanta History Center on October 3, 2006.
Fourth
graders are still striving to read 25 books by the end of
the first semester. Please continue to encourage
your son or daughter to read for at least 20 minutes at home
daily, including weekends. You can also join in on the
reading with your child. It can be a book, newspaper,
or magazine! Whatever the source, just keep reading!
Fifth Grade
The fifth graders are excited about learning. We are
continuing with our concept-based unit Interdependence.
Students are learning about events of the Civil War,
graphing data, and building landforms. The fifth grade
teachers are also planning field trips, which will enhance
and promote students' learning of various concepts.
Please
continue to read with and ask questions nightly of your children.
This will help build comprehension skills.
The fifth
grade teachers are still looking for parent volunteers.
So, please come in and share your time. Remember, it
takes a whole community to aid in the success of our
children.
Muffins
for Mom
Our first
Muffins for Mom Read-In activity will be on Monday,
October 15, 2007. We will gather in the Media Center
at 9:00am for refreshments and room assignments.
Bring you favorite children’s book or poem to read,
or make a selection from several books put out on display.
Remember to stop by the office to sign in, then proceed to
the Media Center. Look for the Muffins for Mom
letter and form to come home soon.
Children
like to be read to at all ages. Let's read for success!
