M. Agnes Jones Elementary School was named in honor of Mary
Agnes Jones who by personal choice, was more widely known as M. Agnes
Jones.
Mrs. Jones was the first African-American supervisor
in the Atlanta Public School System and was among the first in the system
to obtain the Master of Arts Degree in the field of Education and a
Specialist Degree in Supervision. Mrs.
Jones served as a teacher, supervisor and principal with diligence and
high standards.
Mrs. Jones’ ideals
were the essence of excellence. Today,
those who enter to work and learn at M. Agnes Jones, continue her great
legacy by performing to the best of their ability and exemplifying high
standards and achievement.
STUDENT POPULATION
Our student population is 99% African-American.
We serve students in grades Pre-K through fifth grade and three
classes of students in the Program for Exceptional Children.
STAFF
The instructional leadership team consists of our
principal, instructional specialist, math facilitator and reading
facilitator.
Our staff is very diverse and well prepared to serve students in
our wonderful world of learning. Several staff members hold dual certification, National Board
Certification and advanced
degrees. There are
thirty "homeroom"
teachers, three program for exceptional children teachers, a full-time
counselor and social worker, eight specialty support teachers, i.e. physical education,
music, reading recovery (2), early intervention,
speech, five paraprofessionals, five custodians, five food service
workers and a full-time computer support specialist.
THE CURRICULUM
The curriculum at M. Agnes
Jones is standards-based and built on sound learning principles, an
understanding of child development and sensitivity to cultural and
societal needs. We offer the
basics in creative and challenging ways using learning units and interdisciplinary
approaches. Our
learner-focused curriculum stresses cooperative learning and problem
solving and teachers acting as mediators and/or facilitators.
Deliberate attention to parent/ community
involvement for reinforcement of learning acknowledges the critical role
these stakeholders play in the education of student's at Jones.
In addition, the requirements of cooperative activity, scientific
soundness and cultural inclusiveness satisfy fundamental assumptions
concerning student preparedness to function as productive citizens in the
new millennium.
Technology permeates the
learning environment at Jones. Systems
and programs are used to enhance the curriculum, facilitate communication
and extend reality. Examples
include: presentation technologies, communication and media generating
technologies.
