Hurray for the Summer Reading Achievers

The greatest source of knowledge is reading and at Scott Elementary, students are challenged to make reading a lifelong passion.

The U.S. Department of Education and Atlanta Public School teamed up this summer to offer the "No Child Left Behind Summer Reading Achievers" program. Students read at least ten books during the vacation period and provided a brief write up about each book on the Summer Reading Achievers form.

The Scott family will honor those student who successfully completed the program. Reading Achievers will receive a certificate signed by Dr. Beverly Hall, Superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools and Dr. Rod Paige, U.S. Secretary of Education. Other awards will include school supplies, free books and the chance to win computers. Please continue to encourage your children to read everyday.

WE DID IT!

Rejoice with the Scott Family as we celebrate good times. Our school will be recognized at the system wide convocation for reaching its targets in reading, math, writing and attendance for the 2002-2003 school year. Some fourth grade students received cash for their outstanding accomplishments on the Georgia Criterion Reference Test.

Senior Spotlight: Fifth Grade News

Upstairs in the fifth grade hall, many exciting projects are occurring. We are finishing our "Building Blocks of our Community" unit and are getting started on our "Building Blocks of our Country" Artful Learning unit. Our new unit's masterwork is the Unitedf States Constitution, which we are studying as an original piece of work that provides inspiration to students. Students will be working toward answering the significant question: "How does a citizen effect change?" in an essay, while examining the concept of government and learning about elections and how our country's government system works.

In upcoming weeks we will be making many mixtures from common sustances and examining the chemical composition of the new sustances. Were looking forward to the excitement of the science component of our unit.

As many of you know, the fifth grade will participate in the Young Audiences progeram in conjunction with PULSE: A Stomp Odyssey. A field trip is scheduled to view Stomp on September 16th with instruction from a professional from PULSE in weeks to follow. Students will be performing their own culminating performance at the end of the program. We look forward to seeing everyone there. In the mean time, come over and check out the fabulous fifth grade.

What's Up With Third Grade?

We are elated about our new group of thrid graders and the new comprehensive school reform model (Artful Learning/The Bernstein Model). The Artful Learning model addresses the curriculum through the arts using thematic units. We are currently working on government as our first unit. The students are engaged daily in activities for the various disciplines (Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science and Health) with content that relates to government. The students are learning about laws, how they are created, and why they are important. The students have published writings, created mobiles, acted out tableaus, and various other artistic activities to demonstrate their understanding of skills. We are asking that you become an integral part of our new reform model by reinforcing the components of our units.

Second Grade Power

Second grade is on the move with Power Writing! Power Writing is a strategy to teach children how to write a paragraph showing understanding of main idea. This allows us to teach the standards while engaging the students. This will result in high student achievement. Second graders can write about anything using Power Writing.*

*This paragraph is an example of Power Writing.

Counselor's Corner

Where does your child do homework? At the kitchen table On the bed? Children need a consistent, quiet place to do their homework. A table or desk is great. Supplies can be kept there and since the place doesn't change, students will get into the homework mode whenever they sit down there.

Fourth Grade has Something to Shout About

During the Spring of 2006-2007 the GCRT was administered to fourth graders at Scott Elementary. Prior to testing, the fourth grade classes decided we would work diligently to strengthen every weak link in our academic chain. We were resolved to help our school receive a high rating.

Our principal, Mrs. R. Smith provided much assistance to help us. She informed us of the students we needed to work with especially hard. Additionally, extra tutors were hired and a variety of materials were purchased that allowed us to do extensive drills on a daily basis. Bonuses were given to high achieving students by our principal. She made sure that parents were constantly aware of our new strategies and plans.

On August 18th we were told that our hard work had paid off. According to our calculations--we met all of our targets. The students at Scott elementary were winners! the school year 2006-2007 will be no different! We as teachers will again plow, motivate and successfully teach our students so that they will be winners again next spring.
