Georgia Department of Human Resources

Extended Learning Program @ Southside High School

Introduction

Atlanta Public School System (APS)   in collaboration with Georgia Department of Human Resources offer an extended learning program at Southside High School.  The program has two components:  after school session and four-week summer session.  The main program goals are to view observable and measurable improvements in participants’ grade point averages, school attendance, motivation toward pursuing and attending postsecondary options, family involvement and engagement. The program we have constructed is aligned to the mission and objectives of the mandates that guide DHR Youth Initiative and APS.  The Southside community is committed to the economic, social, and academic enrichment of the students and families in the community.  The after school and summer programs will increase educational acuity in the areas of literacy, mathematics, technology and communications.  The administrative staff of the program will also engage the community to develop local partnerships that will support and sustain the long-term growth of the students in our program.  Our focus is to create an intimate small-group learning environment for all participants where we can track their academic performance during their matriculation at Southside and beyond.
