Southside High School Science Program

Overview
The science department emphasizes practical application of science concepts and inquiry-based learning. The major idea is that students learn how to apply the scientific method for future learning potential rather than memorizing large volumes of information that might soon be forgotten. Students have textbooks and lab books or packets as resources. Information gathered in class or given in the form of handouts, that they must apply, is organized into a notebook that is used in class daily.

Major Course Offerings

Physical Science (Matter and Energy)
This course introduces and promotes science process skills and laboratory safety through the study of properties of matter, atomic theory, chemical symbols, stoichiometry, periodic table, organic chemistry, energy, mechanics, waves, energy transfer, electricity and magnetism.

Biology/AP Biology
This series covers the cell, organization of living systems, biochemistry, continuity of life, organic variation, reproduction, genetics, classification, diversity of life forms, and ecological relationships.

Human Biology
This course enhances biology skills and further develops these concepts.  This course stresses topics in human physiology.

Physics
This course covers basic mechanics and its applications including linear motion, Newton’s Laws, static forces, circular and angular motion, conservation of momentum and energy as well as kinetic theory.

Chemistry/AP Chemistry
This series conforms to the College Board topics for the Advanced Placement Chemistry Examination.  This course covers atomic theory and structure, chemical bonding, nuclear chemistry, gases, liquids, solids, solutions, types of reactions, stoichiometry, equilibrium, kinetics, and thermodynamics.

Environmental/AP Environmental
This course covers part of an ecosystem, energy flow, nutrient cycle, population changes, community relationships, natural ecosystems of Georgia, ecological succession, human population, endangered species, air pollution, water pollution, land use, and conservation of natural resources.
