The Atlanta Public Schools Music Program is designed to provide standards-driven, sequential, and comprehensive music instruction that will offer experiences necessary to develop an appreciation for, and skills in, music.
Vision Statement
The study of music is important to the child's personal feelings, intellectual, physical, and social growth, and is a significant part of the cultural heritage of all peoples. Through music, children have the opportunity to develop keener insights into the dignity and worth of mankind, to enjoy a more human educational environment, and to know what they feel and feel what they know.
A complete music program should include experiences in listening to, producing, and performing music. It should:
- Foster the development of children who are actively engaged in learning.
- Contribute to a creative, committed, and exciting school culture, and build bridges to a broader community culture.
- Help generate a dynamic, coordinated, and cohesive curriculum.
- Humanize the learning experience.
- Allow students to value and appreciate the contributions of other students, of history, and of other cultures.
Fundamental skills established in the primary grades are deepened and expanded upon each year so that high school students graduate with an appreciation of, skill in, and understanding of music. The curriculum is designed to provide the experiences necessary to develop and prepare our students in each of these stated aspects, working together with the other subjects towards the development of the total child.
