Elementary General Music

•  All students in grades K-5 should receive a minimum of 30 minutes of music each week, provided by a certified music teacher.

•  Students in grades 3-5 should have the opportunity to participate in a special performance ensemble, such as choir, handbells, African drumming, or creating original operas.

•  If time is available in the daily schedule, at least one class period for chorus is strongly encouraged.

•  An Elementary Instructional Guide has been developed to guide instructional delivery. This guide is based on the Georgia QCCs.

•  Teachers are encouraged to use rubrics and other forms of assessment to evaluate student achievement.

•  Teachers are encouraged to plan with classroom teachers in order to provide a seamless instructional experience.

Elementary
Band

•  Offered to students in grades 4 and 5.

•  Students should participate in a regularly scheduled band class twice a week, for 45 minutes each class.

•  Students are encouraged to participate in the after-school band program that the band director offers one day a week.

•  A limited number of instruments are provided for students' use.

•  Students are encouraged to rent or purchase an instrument.

•  Instructional delivery is based on the Georgia QCCs.

•  All students are expected to participate in at least one special performance during the school year.

Elementary Orchestra

•  Offered to students in grades 4 and 5.

•  Students should participate in a regularly scheduled orchestra class twice a week, for 45 minutes each class.

•  Students are encouraged to participate in the after-school orchestra program that the orchestra director offers one day a week.

•  A limited number of instruments are provided for students' use.

•  Students are encouraged to rent or purchase an instrument.

•  Instructional delivery is based on the Georgia QCCs.

•  All students are expected to participate in at least one special performance during the school year.

Middle School Choral

  • General music classes are available as an elective for students in grades 6, 7, and 8.
  • Each general music class is taught in regularly scheduled classes.
  • Classes are available on a quarterly basis: fall, winter, and spring.
  • General music students will have singing, instrumental, keyboard, music reading, and music appreciation experiences, based on the Georgia QCCs.
  • Middle school students are taught in regularly scheduled daily classes.
  • All middle school students can perform in auditioned and unauditioned choruses.
  • Chorus students are selected on the basis of their singing ability.
  • Chorus students are strongly encouraged to participate in chorus during all three quarters of the school year.
  • Chorus students are expected to participate in programs, concerts, and performance evaluations during and after school hours.

Middle School Band

  • All middle school students are encouraged to participate in band class.
  • Band students are taught in regularly scheduled classes.
  • Sixth grade students who participated in elementary band will be enrolled in an advanced middle school band class.
  • Sixth grade students who did not participate in elementary band will be enrolled in a beginning band class.
  • Middle school band students are expected to:

>participate in one after school rehearsal each week

>participate on programs, concerts, and performance evaluations during and after regular school hours.

  • Sixth grade students who participated in elementary orchestra will be enrolled in an advanced middle school orchestra class.
  • Sixth grade students who did not participate in elementary orchestra will be enrolled in a beginning orchestra class.
  • Middle school orchestra students are expected to:

>participate in one after school rehearsal each week

>participate on programs, concerts, and performance evaluations during and after regular school hours.

  • Students are encouraged to rent or purchase an instrument.

High School Music Program

Curriculum

  • All students in grades 9-12 have the opportunity to receive music instruction throughout the course of their years of high school. They may use an elective for this purpose.
  • Course offerings include band, chorus, orchestra, piano lab, jazz band, music appreciation, music theory, and advance placement courses in music.
  • Instruction is based on the Georgia Learning Curriculum and the APS High School Music Scope and Sequence.
  • Music instruction includes singing, moving, playing instruments, listening to music, and composing music.
  • Many resources have been provided in order to ensure that students receive a quality music education.
  • Music teachers are encouraged to use rubrics and other forms of assessment to evaluate student achievement.
  • Music teachers are encouraged to plan with classroom teachers in order to provide a seamless instructional experience.
