Elementary School Science Instructional ProgramThe elementary science instructional program provides opportunities for students to develop understandings and skills necessary to function productively as problem-solvers in a scientific and technological world. Students are constantly involved in the exploration and inquiry-based investigation of scientific concepts. Curriculum Standards-based curriculum aligned with the National Science Education Standards and Quality Core Curriculum Standards is utilized in all elementary schools. The curriculum focuses on four strands: Physical Science, Life Science, Earth Science, and Process Skills. Experimental activities, science kits, content software, Georgia Department of Education Learning Connection and various community resources are used in the implementation of the curriculum.. Assessment .Assessment is on going and innovative in all elementary schools. These assessments are used for the improvement of instruction . The following assessments are utilized during the school year:
These tests were administered to students to evaluate content knowledge and application of scientific concepts. Integration of Technology The following technology is being used in the elementary schools: Minorities in Science, Windows on Science, and various content software. Computer-based laboratories, PASCO Probes, are also utilized in various elementary schools. Field Trips and Enrichment Activities Field trips to support and enrich the instructional program in all elementary schools are in place. The following field trips are coordinated during the school year: North Atlanta Planetarium Zoo Atlanta Fernbank Science Museum Georgia Institute of Technology Other On-site Field Trip Selections All elementary schools are involved in some form of competition to afford students opportunities to apply scientific concepts.
