Social Studies Program of Study

MISSION STATEMENT

The primary purpose of social studies in Atlanta public Schools is to help students become participating citizens in a democratic society by enabling them to develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good in a culturally diverse interdependent world.

MAJOR COMPONENTS--SOCIAL STUDIES CURRICULUM

• The Georgia Board of Education has adopted these components (knowledge, skills, and values) as key elements of a comprehensive social studies curriculum. This integration of knowledge, skills, and values enables students to make informed and reasoned decisions.
• In order to graduate from a high school in Georgia, a student must take and pass three units of social studies.
